Walk in Place in VR Without a Treadmill
Walking in place gets your legs into VR without extra hardware. This guide explains the technique, how software turns your steps into in-game movement, and where its limits are.
How do you walk in place in VR
The short version: stand still, step on the spot and let software convert your movement into the input the game already reads. Nothing is strapped to you, and the game is not modified.
Stand where you already play
Face your play space and give yourself room to turn. You stay on this spot for the whole session, so you need no more floor space than for any standing VR game.
Start VR StrideS alongside the game
It runs on your PC alongside the game and selects its input path at startup, with no setup for each title.
Walk on the spot
Walk naturally on the spot, one foot then the other. A gentle walk registers, and so does a sprint.
Step the way you want to travel
Your stride direction sets your heading. Step back and you move back. Step sideways and you strafe.
Set the Effort

Keep the stick for the fiddly bits
Conventional controls stay live. Precise positioning is still faster with a thumbstick, and using it does not switch anything off.
How does walking become movement in the game
VR StrideS repeats three steps, in order, about ninety times a second.
It reads your movement
Your headset and controllers are already tracked continuously and precisely because the game needs their positions. Walking in place creates a recognisable pattern in that data: your head rises and falls in rhythm, your weight shifts from side to side, and your arms hang or swing depending on how hard you are working. VR StrideS watches those streams for that pattern.
It works out pace and heading
VR StrideS calculates pace and heading separately. How hard you move sets your speed along a curve you control. The direction of each step sets your heading. This lets a careful step and a hard sprint in the same direction produce different results.
The game receives normal input
VR StrideS sends the result as ordinary thumbstick input through the runtime the game already uses. Nothing is installed into the game, so there is nothing to patch when it updates. As far as the game can tell, someone is holding a stick.
What hardware do you need
- A PC that already runs PC VR games.
- A headset and its controllers.
- Enough floor to stand and turn safely.
Nothing goes on your feet, your waist or your chest. No treadmill, no foot trackers, and no base stations beyond whatever your headset already uses. How is this different from other VR locomotion
Every method below moves you through a game world. What separates them is which part of your body does the work, and what you have to own first.

Arm swing is the closest free alternative, but it keeps your hands busy. That quickly matters when you are holding a weapon, a torch or a climbing hold. There is also a technical difference: arm swing and foot trackers need support from a game or driver, while VR StrideS works at the runtime level with no per-game setup. Which games work
The deciding factor is how a game moves you, not which engine built it. VR StrideS works with smooth stick locomotion, which covers most of PC VR, including flat games brought across with UEVR. Teleport-only games are the exception because there is no stick movement to stand in for. A handful of titles read input in unusual ways and must be checked one at a time.

Can you run in place as well as walk
Yes, and you can jog in between. Cadence is not the only thing that separates them. A walk hangs the arms low, a jog brings them up in front of you, and a run tightens the whole cycle. VR StrideS recognises all three.
The Effort setting controls how much movement a given in-game speed asks of you. At a low setting, a relaxed walk in place reaches full pace. At a high setting, full pace takes a real run.
Can you look one way and walk another
Yes. Your head decides where you look. Your steps decide where you go.
The difference becomes clear in play. Locomotion tied to gaze forces you to look where you are going, which works against you when something is following or you want to watch a doorway while backing away.
Stepping forward moves you forward, stepping back moves you back, and stepping to the side strafes, regardless of where the headset is pointed. Turning stays where it always was: your own body or the stick.
What about precise movement
Walking in place is good for travel but clumsy for tiny adjustments. Lining up a jump, edging along a ledge or nudging into cover is quicker on a stick, and the stick is still there. Conventional controls stay live the whole time, and VR StrideS can be switched off without closing the game.
What walk-in-place VR does not do
- It does not move your real body through space. You stay put and the world moves past you.
- It does not give you the sensation of a stride. Your feet never travel, so there is no slide and no ground rushing under you.
- It does not add movement to a game that has none. Teleport-only titles have nothing to drive.
- It does not replace room scale. Real steps inside your guardian are still real steps, and they still work.
- It is not a mod. Nothing is installed into any game, which is also why nothing breaks on patch day.
Walk-in-place questions
